Disciple Bible Study

The DISCIPLE Bible Study program was authored by United Methodist Bishop Richard Wilke.  DISCIPLE asks persons to commit themselves to an intensive study of Scripture.   The purpose of DISCIPLE may be summarized in the words of Ephesians 4:12: "to equip the saints for the work of the ministries, for building up the body of Christ."

DISCIPLE is a 34-week study that moves through the biblical story from Creation to the New Jerusalem. The hoped-for results of the program are to develop biblically nourished persons committed to live as disciples.

Since the beginning of this study in 1987, DISCIPLE has undoubtedly become one of the most powerful tools of church renewal in the history of the United Methodist Church. Almost one million persons have graduated from DISCIPLE Bible Study, and thousands of churches throughout the country and even in other parts of the world have experienced transformation and spiritual renewal through this powerful study.

There are four separate studies in the first phase of the DISCIPLE series, plus a Second Generation series just begun.

  • Becoming DISCIPLEs Through Bible Study (a 34 week survey of the major themes of the Old and New Testaments;
  • Into the Word into the World (a 32 week study of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts; and
  • Remember Who You Are (a 32 week study of the Prophets and the Letters of Paul.)
  • A fourth study, Under the Tree of Life concentrates on the Writings in the Old Testament: Ruth, 1st and 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Ester, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations and Daniel. New Testament scriptures include the Gospel of John, 1, 2, 3 John, James, Jude, and Revelation.
  • A Second Generation study, Jesus in the Gospels looks at the life of Jesus as reflected in the Gospels, building on the foundation of the previous DISCIPLE series. This study looks at the way each Gospel writer presents events and teaching and at the picture of Jesus that emerges in each of the Gospels. Most daily reading assignments include both Old Testament and New Testament passages, for the passages from the Old Testament are considered important in understanding the Gospel readings.
